Compact design and 5W RF power output (5W/2.5W/1W/0.1W selectable)
A high-resolution display highlights the operating band frequency. The operating band frequency color is selectable from white, blue or red. Three (3) touch panel keys and seven (7) operation keys below the display offer intuitive operability. The new TOUCH & GO operation is convenient for immediately starting communications on a frequently used frequency. By pressing and holding the PMG key, the current display frequency is recorded in the Main Memory Group. After registration, pressing the PMG key will display the reception status of the recorded frequencies as bars on a graph (activity monitor). By simply touching the displayed bar, the user can instantly recall that frequency. (TOUCH & GO Operation) The Band Scope feature monitors in real time, up to 79 displayed channels that are centered around the current VFO frequency. The center frequency can be tuned with the dial knob or by touching and moving the frequency of a displayed channel bar. The C4FM digital communication features that are already popular in the market, such as: Automatic Mode Selection (AMS), Digital Group ID (DG-ID) operation and Smart Navigation function are available with the new FT5DR, it is also compatible with the WiRES-X portable digital node function. A portable digital node can be easily set up with the new FT5DR, an Internet-connected laptop and the optional SCU-39 cable kit.
The Yaesu Fusion System uses the C4FM protocol, which is a proprietary digital technology from Yaesu. Because of this, it is not directly compatible with other brands of equipment that use other digital systems, such as DMR (Digital Mobile Radio), Icom's D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio), or NXDN. These systems use different digital voice modulation and coding protocols, which prevents direct interoperability between them.
While third-party radios that exclusively support analog FM modes may communicate with Yaesu radios in that mode, the digital features of the Fusion System (such as C4FM data transmission or WiRES-X functionality) will only work with other Fusion-compatible Yaesu equipment.
Fusion digital communications are exclusive to Yaesu radios using C4FM. However, analog FM transmissions are compatible between radios of different brands.
